Congratulations to Shahjahan Khan for getting by Timmy Brownell, to become the 2023 Intsel Pro Outdoor Squash Invitational champion!
Shahjahan Khan and Timmy Brownell, USA’s top-ranked Squash Professionals played the Men’s Final for the 2023 Intsel Steel Pro Squash Invitational Outdoor Tournament title on July 22, 2024, on the steel court at Maspeth Squash. This was the final for the previous summer’s Intsel III Tournament.
When our summer-long, handicapped, self-scheduling, self-reffing* pro invitational tournament goes off schedule due to the summer time travel plans of the pros, matches have extended into autumn. Our Intsel II - 2022 men's final was played in November 2022. It was 38 degrees outside.
(*The finals have a ref. This match between Timmy and Shahjahan had only 2 let calls!)
The $30K 2023 Intsel Steel Outdoor Squash Pro Invitational Tournament got off to a good start in June 2023, and the women's final was held in October 2023. But, the men's matches fell behind schedule. Then the pro season had pros playing all over the world at different times. So, we just now finally held the big money $5K final for the men for the 2023 “summer” tournament on July 22, 2024.
Back in June 2023 when the Intsel Steel Tournament draw was posted, Shahjahan was seeded #2 and Timmy #4. By the time this final was played in July 2024, Timmy had won the 2024 SL Green Men's Championship against Shahjahan and they were #1 and #2 in the USA.
Shahjahan and Timmy played the best of 5 games, 0/0 to start, and +1 to the loser of each game.
Shahjahan prevailed, 3-2, and lifted the heavy steel trophy and took home the $5000 top prize.
This tournament is for the many pros who come out to play on the steel court in Maspeth. It has been sponsored for four years by Intsel Steel, Maspeth Welding, and NY Squash. This summer’s Intsel IV has $35k in prize money. Queens NYC Tourism and The PSA Foundation are supporters.
