Coming to Bridgeport, With Love And Irony - A Steel Court.

On June 25, 2020, three months into COVID-19, there were very few places to play squash. On that date, Jeff and I stepped onto the "steel court" in Maspeth.

A Wonderful Experience From Day 1

The fresh air, rubber on steel sounds, the tin in c major, jets, metal grinding, coffee roasting, sun, wind, birds, butterflies, flowers, ... these are part of the many different playing experiences on the steel court.

I've played in a few beautiful places, on some pretty decent squash courts. There has been nothing like this one in Maspeth at Maspeth Welding, until now.

Press Conference with the Mayor of Bridgeport, CT

On Friday, February 16, 2024, Mayor Joe Ganim welcomed the Squash and Education Alliance and local leaders to announce the investment, design, and launch of a new program in 2025, SquashBridge.

One of the most amazing ironies, literally and figuratively, is that the new state-of-the-art SquashBridge facility on Main Street will feature an outdoor steel court. This wasn't lost on the Mayor, who recognized Rick Perlen our guest at the Bridgeport Press Conference on Friday. Rick's company, Intsel Steel is headquartered less than 10 minutes from the SquashBridge location on Main Street. Intsel supplied the steel for the original Maspeth Squash court, has been sponsoring the famous Intsel Outdoor Squash Pro Tournament for four years, and will be helping to build the new facility down the road in Bridgeport.

Google Alert - "steel court"

On February 18th, it came in: a relevant Google alert. For over four years, it was like a message in a bottle, my Google alert for "steel court." This was the first real one.
